This month, I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Laura from the relatively new Laura J Davis Blog. I met Laura through the #TalkMH Chat, which takes place on Thursdays at 8:30PM on Twitter, and can say that Laura is always quick to comment if you are ever feeling low!
1. First up, tell us a little about who you are, your interests and your favourite album of all time?
My name is Laura and I’m 20 years old. I’m a Psychology student at a university in London, with a passion for all things mental health. I love Harry Potter (to the point of obsession!) and I am a member of English Heritage as I really enjoy learning about history! My favourite album of all has to be ‘All This Bad Blood’ by Bastille!
2. Why did you start your blog?
I think the exact date was 11th November 2016, so it’s very new! It’s like my little baby haha.
3. How do you feel mental health affected you and your life?
Unfortunately, my mental health has had a large impact on many aspects of my life; most common being relationships with previous partners that I’ve had. It has caused a lot of doubt, questioning of intentions. When I have anxiety attacks, I can’t do anything until I’ve calmed down. I often feel like I have no control over my thoughts which can be quite disheartening, but of course I’ll always battle it!
4. What has your experience with mental health services been like?
It’s had its difficulties. On the positive side, the doctors, and psychiatrists that I have spoken to have all been very understanding. I’ve not received any judgemental comment or strange look for which I have been very grateful! On the other hand, I had to wait six months to receive psychological therapy which was very difficult and it seemed like the waiting would never end.
5. As an incredible blogger, how do you feel writing has affected your mental health?
Thank you for the compliment, my love! You’re too kind! Starting my blog was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. In the beginning, it was rather frightening as I wasn’t sure of the response I’d get from my posts, but since my first post I’ve received nothing but support and positivity and I’ve made great friends. As a result, I feel much less alone!
6. What motivates you as a person to keep going?
Thankfully I’m quite self-motivated so most of the time I just need to give myself a good pep talk and I’m good to go, but on days where I really do struggle I’ll read some motivational blog posts or remind myself of how far I’ve come in my recovery.
7. Honestly, how do you spend the inevitable dark days?
Probably a lot of crying haha. I feel it’s healthy for me to out my emotions so I’ll lay in bed and cry. Or I’ll just comfort eat! Or both! Essentially, I do what makes me feel better until I feel better!
8. Many people in the public eye are coming out as having mental health issues at the moment. What are your opinions on this?
I think it’s fantastic that they’re brave enough to open up about their issues! I found it difficult to tell my family so I can’t imagine what it must be like as a celebrity and having to read the twisted media stories on top of their own problems. However, I feel like it’s a great way to reduce stigma as it brings the negativity that society places on mental health problems to the surface in order to be confronted once again.
9. What are your top tips for self-care?
Self-care means an awful lot to me. I have a regular routine, kind of like a pamper routine, that I complete at least once a week. First of all, it’s about choosing things that make you feel happy and relaxed, so in the evening it’s a bubble bath and lots of scented candles. During the day I might meditate or take a walk in my local forest. If you’d like to read more, visit this link
10. Any last words of wisdom?
Don’t suffer in silence. Opening up about your feelings to just one person can make you feel so much better. If any of you reading this want someone to talk to, just DM me on Twitter at @lauradavis_96. Just remember, happiness can be found in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light (Albus Dumbledore) 😉
